Awake at 3 a.m.? What to do (and not do)
Calm steps for the middle of the night.
Somni team · Awaiting review by a sleep clinician

Waking in the night is common. What you do next often decides whether you drift back to sleep or lie awake.
Try this
- Keep the lights low and your eyes away from the clock.
- Leave the phone where it is.
- Breathe slowly: Somni’s wind-down uses in for 4, out for 6.
- If you feel wide awake and restless after a while, get up and do something calm in dim light, then return to bed when sleepy.
Avoid this
- Checking the time over and over.
- Scrolling, emails or the news.
- Working out how many hours are left.
Be gentle with yourself
One rough night is normal. Keep your usual wake time the next morning rather than sleeping in.
When to see a doctor
If you often struggle to sleep, snore loudly, stop breathing or gasp in your sleep, or feel very sleepy in the day, talk to a doctor. Somni shares general habits and is not a medical service.
